Rachael Ray, Raekwon the Chef to Open “Only Built for Cuban Sandwiches” Bistro

STATEN ISLAND – Food Network personality Rachael Ray and Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon “the Chef,” are teaming up to open Only Built for Cuban Sandwiches, “Shaolin’s Premier Cuban-Fusion joint.”

The two first joined forces at the South by Southwest music festival in 2009. “I was checking out the hip-hop acts at the Campbell’s Chunky Rhythms Tent and I saw Raekwon pigging out at craft services,” Ray recalls, “I told him we should open a restaurant. So we did.”

“The Chef” (nee Corey Woods), gives a more succinct take on their meeting. “She was that white E-V-O-O bitch. I’d hit that choup, knawmean?”

The menu plays not only to the strengths of Ray’s extensive culinary background, but to Raekwon’s fellow Clan members. “The Ghostface fish po’ boy, Masta Killah krab legs, the RZA ice C.R.E.A.M. sundae; all totally yum-o. It’s classic Cuban cuisine with a sprinkling of ‘street.’”

“And for y’all hungry n*ggas, we got the Sew Ya Asshole Closed and Keep Feedin’ You, and Feedin’ You, and Feedin’ Sunday Buffet.”

The collaboration between Ray and “Shallah” Raekwon is the latest in a series of rap/food mash-ups. In 1999, celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck and Big Punisher opened Big Pun’s Pork Buns, which made a splash in the then-nascent foodie scene. Ray and Raekwon’s restaurant marks the first joint venture between the worlds of hip-hop and haute cuisine since McDonalds’ failed introduction of the Big Mac Miller in 2010.
